Join us for the first edition of our new series: SustainaLab Talks – a monthly event where we dive into current sustainability topics with experts from the field.
For our premiere we will explore the cutting-edge of carbon capture and utilisation technology, and their role in creating a sustainable future. We are bringing together pioneering researchers and startups from Amsterdam, who will share their insights, breakthroughs, and real-world experiences in this rapidly evolving field. You can expect:
- Dr. Sonja Pullen, Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam, will introduce us to the research program at UvA on ‘Synthesis and Catalysis’ and zoom into her work on smart, nature-inspired catalysts that help turn captured CO₂ into useful products for cleaner energy solutions.
- Prof. Dr. Max Welling, CTO and Co-Founder of CuspAI – a frontier AI company on a mission to discover breakthrough materials needed to power human progress. He will share how AI is accelerating the discovery of advanced materials, including those critical to improving carbon capture efficiency.
- Dr. Francesco Dalla Longa, Senior Scientist Energy System Analysis at TNO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek) will talk about techno-economic modelling.
- Presentations from leaders in innovative carbon capture solutions.
- Rob van Straten, CEO of Skytree a leader in engineering the CO₂ transition with modular Direct Air Capture technology that transforms atmospheric CO₂ into a valuable resource.
- Maarten Oudshoorn, CTO of SeaO2, where he leads the development of a novel Direct Ocean Capture technology that uses only renewable electricity and seawater to extract CO₂ from the ocean, enabling permanent carbon removal while helping rebalance the climate and reduce ocean acidification.
- Dr. Jan Vaes, VP of Engineering at Brineworks, where breakthrough electrolysis technology is unlocking low-cost CO₂ and hydrogen to fuel the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries.
- A panel discussion exploring:
- The diverse sources for carbon capture: air, ocean, and more.
- Key challenges and impacts of deploying capture technologies.
- Utilization pathways for captured carbon: fuels, materials, and beyond.
- Firsthand stories about building and scaling a startup in the climate tech space.
- Moderation by Annemieke de Raad – Business Developer at IXA, University of Amsterdam.
Open to the public, with a special invitation to students and researchers from all universities who are passionate about climate innovation and technology.
Date: Thursday, 11th of September, 15.30-18.00 (including drinks).
Location: SustainaLab, Matrix ONE, Amsterdam Science Park 301, 1098 XH Amsterdam
We will wrap up the program with (free) networking drinks!
