Doing your laundry is a major source of microplastics in our environment. The research project SISTEM-NL aims to tackle microplastic pollution caused by microfibers released by washing textiles, by conducting research with citizens on measuring these fibers.
Date: Tuesday April 23rd, 16.00 – 17.30 (drinks afterwards)
Location: SustainaLab, Matrix ONE, Amsterdam Science Park 301, 1098 XH Amsterdam.
By estimating microfiber emissions in the Netherlands and testing the effectiveness of Citizen Science in addressing microplastic pollution, this interdisciplinary study aims to enhance public awareness and engagement. By providing knowledge and communication tools, the crucial topic of microplastic pollution is addressed.
On April 23rd, we announce a new step in our research: SISTEM-NL and SustainaLab are joining forces with a laundry laboratory on campus where everyone can do their laundry – free of charge – and at the same time contribute to the collection of microplastics. We are also proud to present the first results of the “Alle Scholen Verzamelen” campaign “Pluis het Uit”, where primary school children were pioneers in collecting microplastics.
Agenda:
16:00-16:15 Arrival
16:15-16:25 Welcome & Sustainalab intro
16:25-16:40 Intro SISTEM-NL by Dr. Antonia Praetorius
16:40-17:10 Presenting results ‘Alle Scholen Verzamelen’ project, by Dr. Lies Jacobs
17:10-17:30 SustainaLab laundry machine + demo by Jr. researcher Bernou Boven
17:30-18:00 Drinks at Café NEO
Curious about what all this will look like, whether you can do your own laundry, or what happens when almost 2,000 children do research together? Join us on the 23rd of April at 16.00 in SustainaLab!
