Collective Futures presents: Fair Effort in the Energy Transition & Redesigning Local Economies

Join us for an inspiring afternoon where our students present the results of their five-month projects addressing societal challenges.

At Collective Futures, students work at bridging academia and practice, collaborating with external partners to explore how their master’s studies can contribute to meaningful change in the real world.

This year’s projects focus on two important themes:

The energy transition and high-income households
Together with Actienetwerk GasTerug, students investigated the impact high-income households can make on reducing carbon emissions. Research shows that these households contribute disproportionately to carbon emissions due to higher levels of consumption, mobility, and energy use. Globally, the wealthiest 10% account for nearly half of total emissions, while the poorest 50% contribute only a small fraction. Despite this, most existing policies and interventions primarily target low- and middle-income groups.

Redesigning local economies in Amsterdam Noord
In collaboration with Buurthuis De Bol, students explored how Community Wealth Building can create more inclusive and resilient neighborhoods. Restaurant Sufra, a social catering cooperative creating job opportunities for residents facing barriers to the labor market, acted as a case study. While public procurement systems increasingly emphasize social impact, a key challenge remains: aligning these requirements with the operational realities and capacities of social cooperatives.
