Did you know that there are more than 100 species of bees and wasps in Anna’s Garden & Ruin? In 2024, Bodhi Soederhuizen spent a year researching what insects live in Anna’s Garden. He found several new species, including many bees and wasps. Most people do not know that there are more than 300 species of bees and 5,000 species of wasps in the Netherlands and the crucial role they play in the ecosystem. This lack of knowledge is partly due to the wasp’s negative image. Unloved makes unknown, you could say, while wasps are very important!
Bodhi Soederhuizen studies biology at the University of Amsterdam. In his spare time, he collects and studies bees and wasps. He has become immensely fascinated by these versatile and beautiful creatures and would like to inspire others too!

Would you like to know more about the research and learn how to recognise bees and wasps yourself? Then come to this workshop at SustainaLab! Not only will you learn about the different species of bees and wasps, but you can also practice on the collection material from Anna’s Garden. After a catchy theoretical introduction in Sustainalab, we will go out together in Anna’s Garden to catch and identify insects as budding entomologists. We conclude with herbal tea from the garden and a spring snack. Tip: bring your reading glasses and/or a magnifying glass!
